Interview with Founder All That It Seams, Caitlin Childs

Caitlin Childs started sewing when she was just eight years old. At age fifteen, Caitlin learned to knit. From that point on, she began making all of her own accessories. When she got married, Caitlin took a job as a seamstress and perfected her sewing skills. From that point, she took another job as a boutique manager and learned the ins and outs of the fashion industry. Once Caitlin felt like she had enough skills and knowledge to pursue her dreams, she took the plunge and opened her own business in 2016. Since then, Caitlin have received a celebrity endorsement with each product launch and have been able to partner with multiple animal shelters.

It's my pleasure to introduce Caitlin.

Faten Abdallah (FA): Why did you become an entrepreneur?
Caitlin Childs (CC):  I don’t think that becoming an entrepreneur was ever something that I “decided” to do. It was more like a calling for me. I was being drawn to the career that allowed me to showcase my talents and pursue my passions.

FA: What have you learned about yourself as an entrepreneur?
CC:  I’m definitely more resilient than I thought I was. Before owning my own business, when problems would arise, I would let them get me down for days at a time. Now, I’ve learned that when faced with a challenge, I just have to put my head down and figure out a way around it.

FA:  How do you find the latest fashion classics and trends?
CC:  I spend a lot of time on Pinterest. As crazy as it sounds, pinterest is a great resource for the newest upcoming fashion trends.

FA: What makes your clothing business different than other clothing businesses?
CC: Whenever I was working as a boutique manager, I noticed that in the world of women’s fashion accessories, you can either choose between fashionable or functional. It’s nearly impossible to find products that meet both criteria. I wanted to bridge that gap and create accessories that are not only functional for everyday life, but that have their own classic sense of style as well.

FA: You have some partnerships. Please tell us about them.
CC: We have the privilege of partnering with several animal shelters in an attempt to make sure that every shelter animal is provided with the emotional and physical care they deserve. A portion of our proceeds each month are donated to this cause.

We’re very excited to announce our new fall/winter product line launching in October. We will be offering a wide variety of bags and accessories designed specifically for cooler weather.

Feature Friday: Meet Jida Kalai

Often times, I've stared at my closet wondering what to wear.  Do I wear this or that?  Should I get whole new makeover?  Well I had the privilege of interviewing Jida Kalai, a fashion blogger and interior designer.

Enjoy the interview.

Faten Abdallah (FA): What are three must have pieces every woman should have in her closet? Why?
Jida Kalai (JK): Our closet essentials depend on our lifestyle and where we are at in our life.  A career woman's wardrobe may differ than a stay at home mom for example, but the three must have pieces I think every fashionista should have are:
        1. A pair of well fitting jeans is a must.  As long as it fits perfectly and hits you in the right places, it will never go out of style.  Denim can be worn  in day time to run errands and for going out at night by throwing a dressy top over it and some heels. This actually makes it perfect for traveling too.
        2. A little simple solid color dress.  I am not going to say black, because as long you pick a neutral color you will get a lot of use out of it.  Every fashionista should have a classic short dress that she can wear with flats, with boots, and with heels.  I have one that I wear in winter and summer.  I throw a large scarf over it and a pair of tall boots or I wear it with heels and a nice necklace.  Invest in a flattering dress and you will wear it a lot.
       3. A pair of statement shoes: I think every fashionista out there should invest in one pair of classic, yet flashy heels that you can wear to a party with a dress or with your favorite denim and t-shirt.  It's an easy way to look fab when you don't have the energy to dress up.

FA: How much should one budget for clothes per year?
JK: I actually have read somewhere that your clothes allowance should not exceed 5% of your net income.  I think it varies year to year, and it depends if you are investing in essential pieces.  For instance,  if you are buying a coat and a pair of boots you might go over budget for the year, but you are not going to make the same purchase every year.  The way I look at it is that you have to shop like an investor.  Spend your money on pieces that will get you the best return on investment: pieces that are universal, classic, and can be worn a lot.

FA: How often should a woman update her closet?
JK: I would say every six months.  I take the opportunity at the end of the fall season to declutter my summer wardrobe and I do the same at the end of winter.  Everything I didn't wear in six months leaves my closet.  The exception is cocktail outfits.  These I might go over every 12 months.  We tend to hold on to things that don't serve us and create clutter in our lives.  We need to practice to let go and create space to invite new fresh things into our lives and in this case our closets :).

FA: How does a woman pick the right style/fashion for her?
JK: This is a question that will take pages to answer.  In general, don't follow a trend unless it works for your body type.  Every woman can look super fashionable and trendy if she is to pick what flatters her figure.  Super tight clothes and hip huggers for instance are not for everyone.  Pick clothes that highlight your best body parts and hide your imperfections.  Even though they say age is only a number, don't expect to look sexy in a teenage outfit.  Our body changes and so does our fashion style.  Your eye is your best judge.  Don't buy a piece that looks good, buy one that looks good on you.
FA: Give some tips on how to eat healthy.
JK: My number one rule for eating healthy is to avoid processed foods.  Go for fresh produce.  It takes your body less energy to digest.  I created the Elegant Eats blog to help people create delicious recipes that are super healthy.  Anything that is in a can or a jar has some sort of preservatives.  I don't believe in deprivation or counting calories to lose weight.  All these energy or protein bars have tons of processed sugars that don't do your body any good.  Your diet should be rich in fresh fruits and vegetables in addition to a good source of protein and carbs.  When it comes to meats, fish, chicken the same rule applies, avoid anything processed.  Make sure to include fatty acids in your diet.  Avocados, fish, nuts are really great for your skin, hair, and nails.  If you are over 20, cut down your dairy intake.  Start your day with a glass of warm water and lemon to cleanse your body.  Fruits are better consumed on an empty stomach not after heavy meals.  Opt for baking rather than frying.  Include grains in your diet.  Make your main meal  at dinner time.  Don't mix too many proteins in one meal.  Treat your body as a temple.
FA: What's your favorite recipe?
JK: Because I have a sweet tooth, my favorite has to be a sweet, delicious desert. ;) Check out my "Memorial Day Sweet Bites.  They satisfy my craving for sweets and energize my body at the same time with no processed sugars whatsoever.  I always have them handy at home.

FA: Anything else you would like to add
JK: Give your self a chance to do what you like and have passion for.  It is never too late.  As for any future projects, I have two that I need to work on.  The first is to create an online interior design shop (as you might know I am an interior designer).  My next project is to put a healthy cook book together for the fashionistas out there.  It will include all the recipes on my blog and maybe more.  Make sure to follow me on instagram, Facebook, and twitter and of course my blog at elegantfashionista.com   Leave me your honest comments and what you would like to see on my blog.

Fresh Design Ideas for Summer!

The change of seasons brings about many new aesthetics from clothing style to interior design. If you’re thinking about updating your space this summer, I’d like to introduce you to J Design Group. CEO/Founder Jennifer Corredor has worked on premier projects around the world.

Beyond luxury homes, J Design Group has been responsible for the sensational interiors of hotels, restaurants, financial institutions, corporate facilities, casinos, and resorts on an international scale. They have accumulated many prestigious accolades including the Best of Houzz 2015 award in Design and Client Satisfaction.

Read the interview with Jennifer.

Faten (FA): How should one get started without feeling overwhelmed?
Jennifer Corredor (JC):  If one is concerned about being overwhelmed, this could be achieved by doing room by room, so as not to feel the effects of pressure. However, the design as a whole should be done on the onset so that the design overall at the end will flow.

FA:  What are some must have pieces that should be in a living space?
JC: One very important piece of furniture that is always necessary is to have is a comfortable sofa that one can enjoy and relax.

FA: What are some tips on updating for those on a budget?
JC: Always remember designing these days that there is an array of products that are very well priced and it can be more easily achieved and cost effective.
Having the space plan is a must before purchasing or making any decisions.

FA: Which celebrity did you update their space?
JCWe have designed homes for several celebrities, though our clients are very private and prefer not to be mentioned.

Business Resource: Newest Online Retail Haven: Shop on Main

Imagine taking a stroll down Main Street, going from boutique to boutique, window shopping, and purchasing the latest trends, all while sitting in front of your computer screen. Imagine engaging with fellow fashionistas and building personalized neighborhoods consisting of your favorite stores from across the country with just the click of a mouse.

These luxuries cannot be found on traditional online retail websites, but ShopOnMain.com is now here to make all of your virtual fashion dreams come true!

With ShopOnMain.com you can fully delight in your shopping desires, with direct access to the best online boutiques across the country. The site is fully interactive, allowing you to connect with other users through its social media channel without the hassle of trolls and stalkers, all while browsing the website as if you are strolling along the boulevard, browsing as you go.

So, I wanted to know more about Shop on Main because I am a big fan of Main Streets, USA, because you can find unique shops.  The interview is me: FA and SM is Shop on Main.

Faten (FA)What inspired the creation of Shop on Main?

Shop on Main (SM): We had several small business clients who were frustrated with their online sales.  We found that it was nearly impossible to help them within the confines of the current online sales platforms available. Most are not really set up favorably for the small business. You wind up competing solely on price, and sometimes the platforms themselves will even compete against you. Worse, the shopper often doesn’t even know exactly whom they are purchasing from. Small businesses spend time, effort and money building their store –but- the only business shoppers see is the platform itself.

So we wanted to create something that would be a better experience for small businesses, especially our clients.

But how to make it appealing to shoppers? Why should they come here instead of visiting the places that already exist? This is what led us to develop the idea of creating a unique experience for shoppers. One where you can shop like we do in the real world.  Pick an area (say San Francisco) then explore and discover … rather than hunt, add it to your cart and buy.

So really, we’re hoping to create something new on two fronts: A better experience for merchants, and a unique experience for shoppers.

FA: Who is behind the website?
SM: JJSmith Marketing. We’re a small company that handles internet marketing for clients. Our founder, Joseph Smith, was involved in online and software companies like Amazon.com in their earliest days. He took this knowledge and built a small team of talented dreamers who are just crazy enough to think they can change the world. The online world, anyway.

FA: What do the owners/creators hope Shop on Main will achieve?
SM: Right now, millions of tiny little Mom and Pop stores have their existence threatened not only by big box stores, but by the rise of online shopping. We envision a path to getting those stores online in a way that allows them to use the power of the internet FOR their businesses rather than feeling that it’s something they can’t quite make work. Or worse, something that’s an actual threat to their shops.

We want to create a place where merchants can grow their businesses together with thousands of other merchants from across the country, without just a race to the lowest price.

We see a place where shoppers can connect with those businesses and support them. But also, where shoppers can feel enriched by the shopping experience. Where you can spend an hour when you’re stuck on the bus or at the waiting room and walk away without feeling like you’ve wasted time, but instead that you’ve been somewhere, that you’ve experienced something new.

This is where you can find the unique gems that are hidden in stores all over the country (and eventually the world!) that aren’t found online now, because it’s not worth the effort for the smallest stores to add them to the giant shopping platforms.

FA: What can our readers on the site?  Why should they stop there?
SM: If they’re merchants, they should definitely talk to us about creating a store listing. Even if they’ve never sold products online before, we can help them get set up and make it work in a way that truly benefits them. We have some special benefits laid out for the merchants who sign up before we open to the public that will definitely make it worthwhile to sign up now rather than later when we’re the big thing online.

If you’re a shopper, then we have our “First Shoppers Club.” As we gear up to launch the site in the next 2-3 months, we need people that want to provide feedback in exchange for some really nice perks and benefits. What do they think of the experience as it unfolds? What do we need to add or change to make it truly unique for them?

We need to know what real shoppers think, and if they’ll actually provide that feedback we’ll make it well worth their while!

FA: How is Shop on Main similar/different to Shop on Main Street in real life?
SM: For one thing, it will be open 24 hours a day. So if you want to see what’s new at the store on the corner (or the corner in San Francisco or New York City) you can do that at 3 am. You’ll be able to add products to your cart from different stores all over the country and only check out once (we’ll divide the money and get it to the correct stores on our end, so for them it’s as if you checked out there, but for you it’s seamless).

It will be similar to shopping Main Street in that you can browse the stores in a particular area without having a certain product in mind. Merchants will be able to create a “store front window” that they can completely customize – some may want to show you certain product images in that window, some may want to show you a video of their quirky storefront, or a video of the owner saying hello… or maybe they just have text they want to put there for you to read. So as you scroll through your results, it’s like walking down a street and seeing which doors you want to open up, walk in and check out.

FA: Anything else to add?
SM: Merchants are going to be the key to this entire experience. So if you have products to sell, definitely get in touch! And if you’re a shopper who has a favorite store you’d really like to see, please let us know!

Guest Post: Spring Fashion: How to Save on Seven Trends

by
Kendal Perez

The first official day of spring has finally arrived, creating the desire to overhaul our wardrobes with the latest looks. Sadly, most of us don't have celebrity-sized bank accounts to accompany our star-worthy fashion sense. But that doesn't mean we have to miss out on the latest trends. Consider the following ways to update your spring wardrobe without falling into debt.

1. Pastels
Just in time for Easter, pastels are making a name for themselves on New York runways. Embracing this trend requires the purchase of one versatile piece - like a blazer or pencil skirt - to be paired with other basics already available in your wardrobe. Channel your inner Chanel and pair pastel pink with black accessories, or keep it light with nude accents.

2. Colorful Denim
Leftover from fall, the colorful denim trend is spreading faster than wildfire and offers a refreshing pop of color to any outfit. Since this look is definitely a fad, avoid spending too much on your first (or third) pair by shopping inexpensive retailers like Kohl's. Shop online for even more inventory and savings, and look for Kohl's free shipping codes from FreeShipping.org to dodge delivery costs.

3. Sporty
You might say Sporty Spice was ahead of her time in her choice of athletic-inspired ensembles. Or not. Regardless of your attitude about the "Wannabe" star, active wear and sports-inspired looks are definitely in. That means you can enjoy your off-the-shoulder fleece for at least one more season, and incorporate your gym go-tos into everyday outfits.

4. Color Blocking
Color blocking is one of the easier trends to embrace and offers an opportunity to incorporate other trends. For example, you can pair bright denim pants with a neon shirt or blouse to easily achieve the look. Bisect the top from the bottom with a neutral belt -- think black, navy or white -- and accessorize with equally neutral jewelry.

5. Tangerine Tango
I'm enamored by the color orange and publicly display my affection with a bright leather purse I purchased a couple years ago. Tangerine Tango has a decidedly redder hue but can be incorporated easily with accessories. You can also find inexpensive tees or blouses to embrace the official color of 2012 without going overboard. If you want to balance the brightness, pair with white or gray. If you're more daring, go for hot pink or teal.

6. Metallic
Shiny dresses are great for the red carpet -- Jennifer Lawrence is clearly a fan -- but avoid this trend during the nine-to-five. Depending on your workplace environment, you might pull off metallic pants with a white blouse and black blazer. Alternatively, embrace the trend with footwear and find shiny heels for work and metallic, strappy espadrilles for weekends. Endless.com offers a great selection of well-priced foot candy, and free shipping both ways allows you to return whatever doesn't fit.

7. Bold Prints
As if neon and color-blocking weren't bold enough this season, runways everywhere featured bold prints with nods to art deco and the great outdoors. Since this look will likely go the way of last season's Navajo-inspired patterns, opt for one or two pieces that you can pair with basics from your closet. Shop discount retailers like TJMaxx and Ross to find this trend on the cheap.

Guest Post: Fashion Made Affordable: 8 Money-Saving Style Tips for Men

by

Andrea Woroch

When it comes to fashion, men have had a free pass for far too long. In the Information Age, not knowing any better simply doesn't cut it. Though casual attire is showing up in an increasing number of workplaces, there's
still something to dressing for success.

Stocking up on a few new looks might postpone your impending PlayStation 3 purchase, but it doesn't have to drain your bank account. There are plenty of affordable ways to create a professional wardrobe. Before you start buying up penny loafers and blazers, consider a few of these money-saving style tips for men.

1. Go Generic
Does seeing a $150 price-tag on a button up from a brand you've never heard of make you sick to your stomach? If so, you'll be happy to learn the shirt underneath your jacket or sweater isn't the most important piece of an outfit. While shirts provide a foundation for your overall look, they're generally pretty standard. Stores like Kohl's and Target have affordable prices on collared shirts appropriate for just about any office.

2. Timely Shopping
Surprisingly enough, some months are better for buying suits than others. Purchasing suits in either January or July is your best bet, as these months are typically when retailers reduce prices on last season's styles. You can score even more savings by using a discount store gift card from sites like GiftCardGranny, which instantly trims up to 35-percent off your purchase price. Unless you work with a few fashionistas, odds are the rest of the office won't have any idea you got your suits on sale.

3. Shoe Shop Online
Sneaker shopping is popular with many men, but a pair of Jordan's don't quite cut it in a professional environment. Luckily, sites likeZappos.com offer free shipping and free returns with all shoe orders. This provides the convenience of shopping from home without the worry of getting stuck with the wrong size.

4. Ditch Dry-Clean Only
As you upgrade your wardrobe, it's important to check the tags of any items you buy. If possible, dry-clean only should be avoided at all costs. Not only is dry cleaning expensive, it's also inconvenient. Unless you're especially motivated to maintain your look, you'll likely wind up with a closet full of dirty clothes.

5. Keep it Clean
If you think flipping your tie over your shoulder at lunch is the best way to stop stains, you're probably not familiar with the Tide to Go Pen. This handy little contraption can be kept in a pocket or desk drawer and makes everything from barbecue sauce to coffee disappear in an instant. Your days of strategic shirt tucking and tie placement are finally over.

6. Make it Interchangeable
It's nice to have some interesting patterns and vibrant colors mixed into your wardrobe, but don't invest heavily in them. Solid, standard colors like light blue can be combined with a variety of different pants and jackets. Shopping this way limits the number of items you need to buy as you're able to create several different looks with a small stable of clothes.

7. Get the Deductions
Don't let clothes you know you'll never wear again take up all of your closet space. If you're running short on cash, your most current styles can always be sold online or at a local consignment store. Ebay is an easy fallback option, but sites such asResaleShopping.com help you locate stores in your area that specialize in buying men’s clothing. Another option is to pack your clean clothes in a box and drop them off at a donation center. Make sure you pick up a signed and dated receipt to get the tax deductions in the spring.

8. Get Healthy
When you find yourself going through sizes like a middle-schooler during a growth spurt, consider counteracting your expanding waistline with diet and exercise. It's often hard to get motivated, but a brisk walk or bike ride every day makes an impact. After slimming a few inches, you'll have access to formerly ill-fitting items you've already purchased.

Gossip Girl and Fashion

Fashion now is the statement or identity of a person.  One cannot help but notice the fashion statements portrayed by the characters on Gossip Girl.  There is Blair's style, a classic chic, and Serena's style, sexy and effortless.  I love both of their looks because they both portray confidence and sophistication.  Dressing to their personality style helps build confidence in each of the characters.

Marketing 101 With Anne Welch

It’s a tough time for magazines, but ELLE’s success only seems to grow, as seen in partnerships with Project Runway, MTV’s The City, and more.  Anne Welch, Vice President and Brand Publisher of Elle Magazine, didn’t play a small part in this – she’s an expert at reaching fashionistas, even in a time when shopping is taboo.  Here are a few of Welch’s marketing “basics” – just a taste of the knowledge she’ll share as a speaker at AdweekMedia’s inaugural Marketing to Women conference next Wednesday, November 4.  Women’s purchasing power is more influential than ever before; don’t miss this opportunity to learn what makes a woman reach into her wallet and spend.

Anne offers some insight.

What marketers/brands do you admire and “look up to” for their strategies?
Apple – for defining cool
Target – for bringing fashion to the masses
Net-a-Porter – for taking e-commerce to the next level
Louis Vuitton – for remaining true to themselves

What are key marketing tips that you’ve learned that you feel are important to share?

Reinforce our Mission
ELLE has a distinct voice and one that separates us from our competition. It all begins with our mission and resulting editorial product. Over the past year we have solidified our position in the marketplace as the preeminent magazine for a relevant and relatable mix of fashion. While our competition has adjusted their editorial philosophy to the economic climate, ELLE has remained true to the magazine’s fashion mission: offering both practical and aspirational clothing and accessories; highlighting the trends, but never dictating them; and encouraging personal style and individuality.

Invest in Research
Consumer insight opens doors. In 2008, ELLE sponsored a ground-breaking study that profiled and identified today’s recession-proof shoppers. This study not only educated advertisers on the three types of women who will continue to shop in the face of the recession, but it also stressed the importance of fashion magazines. On every single measure studied, fashion magazine readers are significantly more qualified than that who do not read them: they spend more, they shop more, and they are more knowledgeable.

Innovate and Take Risks
ELLE is a magazine that has always taken risks—we were the first fashion magazine to launch a companion website and the first to participate in a reality television show. While the competition usually follows suit, ELLE continues to push the boundaries of what a fashion resource can do. Last spring we continued to innovate by launching the ELLE Dailies, a free subscription-based e-mail newsletter delivered to a broad, yet targeted, audience of prime fashion consumers.  In order to provide readers with more of the content they crave, last fall ELLE launched “Fall A to Zee,” an online feature that highlighted creative director, Joe Zee’s, key pieces and trends for the season. Over 400,000 consumers visited the site where they were able to click to buy straight from the advertising or the edit. Back by popular demand, Joe is again curating an alphabet’s worth of trends in Fall A to Zee and the ELLE Dailies have been extended to nine weeks reaching over 1 million opt-in subscribers daily.

With Project Runway, Stylista, and Ugly Betty, ELLE has always looked for creative ways to integrate the brand into television in order to increase brand awareness. Along these same lines, ELLE recently signed on with the Creative Artists Agency  (CAA), the world’s largest talent and branded entertainment agency representing clients such as Dell, Gap, and Coke. CAA will search for new opportunities for ELLE in television, motion pictures, DVD, and digital.

What have you learned not to do in your experience as a marketer?

Never Say Never
Over the last six years, ELLE has methodically moved up the ranks of fashion titles in the US by growing ad pages and share of market. In 2002, ELLE ranked 6th among the 7-book competitive set and had a 12% share of market. Today, ELLE is ranked #1 with 1,652 pages (and nearly 19% share) through October—two more pages than perennial category leader Vogue.

Limit Where the Brand Lives
With a crowded market place and tight consumer dollars, more so than in the past, advertisers have been looking for one thing when seeking media partners: proof of engagement. They want to know consumers are actively pursuing your brand and investing their valuable time and/or resources in it. To keep their experience with ELLE fresh, we are always looking for new ways to engage consumers both in-book and beyond the page. Whether it’s through a branded line of clothing or unique retail partnerships, we know our readers respect our opinion and therefore will seek our content through multiple touch points. Below are just a few examples:

  • Licensed Products: In addition to an ELLE branded line of jewelry and eyewear, in Spring 2007, Kohl’s department stores launched the ELLE Contemporary Collection, a line of runway-inspired women’s apparel and accessories. Now available in all 1,000 Kohl’s stores in 47 states, 2009 sales are projected to top $80 million.
  • ELLE Edit: ELLE is partnering with the New York store, Edit, to provide a high-end e-commerce area featuring fashion items that can be purchased online or at the store. Planned for a Spring 2010 launch offline and online.
  • ELLE Spa: Expected to open in June 2010, ELLE is opening a spa in partnership with the newly renovated Eden Roc hotel in Miami Beach.
  • Make Better Platform: ELLE’s year-long Make Better program incorporates everything from in-book content to a social media platform to a DVD series starring model Brooklyn Decker, ELLE’s creative director Joe Zee, beauty/fitness director Emily Dougherty, and a host of fitness experts as they give consumers tips on fitness, fashion, and beauty that will help them make small improvements in their already great lives.
