Interview with Kathy William Chiang: Things You Should Know and Do With Your Data

Kathy William Chiang VP, Business Insights, at Wunderman Data Management, is a co-author of the new book, Monetizing Your Data: A Guide to Turning Data into Profit-Driving Strategies and Solutions [Wiley]. With the explosion of information available from emails, online searches, text messages, blog posts, and postings on Facebook and YouTube, Chiang has seen a shift in how data is being used across all business sectors and have unique insight and knowledge into the analytics that business leaders should be using to increase their profit.

Read on for what Kathy has to say.

Faten Abdallah (FA): Why is it important for companies to collect data?
Kathy William Chiang (KWC): Data captures the life flow of the business. It is a record of each and every activity that the business conducts. Since practically every key system that a company uses is now computerized, such as CRM, Point of Sale, Production Management, Billing and so on, a digital record of every important activity the company undertakes is available to be collected, stored and studied.

Through collecting and analyzing their data, companies have a window into the health of their business. This is analogous to going to your doctor to have medical tests performed. You may be feeling just fine but when data on vital stats is collected, potential underlying issues are revealed that if addressed early can be prevented from impacting your health.

If companies don’t collect, monitor, and analyze their data, they will end up making decisions based on feelings or prior experience which may not be representative of the market forces they currently face. Without a good understanding of the trends and patterns of their business, managers can find themselves reacting to the noise of the day. Today’s sales are down, yesterday’s were up. How do you know which is more representative of the trend?

FA: What kind of data should companies collect?
KWC: The short answer is all the data they can at the most detail level possible.

This is because you cannot predict what business challenge you will face this week, next month, or next year. Is it a demand issue? Then comparing seasonal patterns of sales by product type is important. Is it a supply issue? Then looking at production output, completed orders, backlog will be key. Is it a product quality issues, then looking at customer complaints to the service center or online comments are critical. When an issue arises, if you don’t have historical context to examine, you will be flying blind when deciding how to react.

Additionally, you want to keep the data as granular as possible, that is data at the level of individual transactions. Summarizing and averaging data causes valuable information to be lost. If one particular plant or supplier is the source of a production issue, this information can be lost if production data from all sources are summed up to save space or reduce the quantity of records.

The dramatic reduction in data storage costs, the increased power of computer technology and the proliferation of cloud based systems are making storing and accessing core business data a financially feasible proposition for companies large and small. These new technologies are leveling the playing field with respect to business analytics for small and medium companies. Competing on Data is no longer just an option for large enterprises.

FA: Often times, it is common to find data stored with no action.  What should companies do with collected data?
KWC: Having just said you should keep any and all of your data, the flip side is that you should not simply start funneling all that data to your managers. Being overwhelmed by a flood of data, reports and analytics is a common problem today.

Once companies have made the effort to collect a treasure trove of data, the temptation is to try to use it in daily business but oftentimes astrategy to use it to drive actions and decisions is lacking.
A common mistake companies make is to think they can hire data scientists to mine their data for ‘nuggets’ that will then give them insights on how to improve the business. But as the old adage goes, if you don’t know where you are going, any road will take you there. Managers need to spend time thinking through the actions they need to take and architecting the decision process to make those actions productive and meaningful.

Data is the ‘hard’ quantitative side of the business, but the ‘soft’ qualitative side is equally vital to making smart decisions. Being aware of and actively managing biases and points of view that managers bring to the table when facing a business issue, helps companies to make more objective and thoughtful decisions. Furthermore, historical data of the business can reveal insights about the future only to a point, probability and uncertainty also need to be considered when developing strategies and plans.

FA: What are some tools useful for collecting and implementing data driven information?
KWC: Tools needed to collect, store and analyze data are becoming increasingly affordable and easy to use. A good database to store and structure your data is a must. Add to that a good data visualization tool and you have everything you need to get started. All of these assets are available as on-premise or cloud-based services eliminating the need for large up-front investments.

In business, there is a common expression. If you don’t eat your lunch, someone else will. Competing on data is now a core business process. If you don’t start learning how to deepen your understanding of your customers, their needs and wants, then someone else will come along and serve them better.

Bringing data into your business management and decision processes is a journey. No one starts the process with a perfect understanding about how to go about it and everyone is learning more each day. The important point is to get started.

We talk about the ideas presented here in much more detail in our book, Monetizing Your Data: A Guide to Turning Data into Profit-Driving Strategies and Solutions, available on Amazon.com. Guest Post: Why All Businesses Should Be Using Video in 2017 to Grow Their Business

by

Andrea Kalli

Videos works!  We know that, but too many just don’t use them.  Why?  Mainly fear.  Fear that they won’t get the results they hoped for.  Fear they won’t know how to effectively use them.  Or fear that they are too expensive for their budgets.  Some even fear needing to go in front of the camera.  The good news is businesses have no reason to fear.  Videos are not only affordable and easy to use, but also one of the best ways to market.  And today, if you don’t want to go in front of the camera, there is no need to do so. It’s that simple!

When you realize stats like those mentioned recently in a recent SmallBizTrend article that state that “80 percent of users recall a video ad they viewed in the past 30 day,” you can see why you should be using videos.  Another example mentioned in that same article stated, “According to 70 percent of marketers, video produces more conversions than any other type of content.”  Can you see the power of video? You should!

So let’s face these fears and break it down.

Why Use Video:
·         Videos provide a way to remain “top of mind.” What does that mean exactly?  It means, when someone sees your logo, they think of you.  They remember you from your video.  They feel they know you because the video adds that level of comfort and confidence.
·         Videos provide a visually robust way to evoke a strong emotion and get viewers to take action. If you’re struggling to get your audience to react to your content, video will solve this. So will you get results, absolutely!
·         Videos introduce your company, business philosophy, and services/products and help to build your brand awareness.  What better way to show who you are and what you do.
·         Videos help with all your marketing. Videos should be used not only on your website, but in all your social media, emails, newsletters, and more.
·         Videos provide a means to regularly stay in contact with clients through education-based, warm and friendly, non-sales content.
·         Today videos are so affordable that having an ongoing commitment is easy to do and encouraged.
·         There are so many methods to do videos, if you won’t want to get in front of the camera; there is no need to do so.  For example, you can do an audio-only voice recording that will be used with other video clips, images, animations, text and music. You can outsource a video spokesperson to present the message on your behalf. You can use hand drawn whiteboard sketch or illustrated animations and characters.
·         Videos provide a way to showcase the holidays.  What better way to say “happy holidays” than with a video with your company logo on it!  And this isn’t just for the major holidays, but throughout the year as well for all special occasions.
·         And so much more
Who can most benefit with video?  Truly any business can benefit by making videos part of their marketing plan.  However, these businesses truly do gain traction:  marketing companies, real estate agents, speakers, coaches, authors, virtual assistant businesses, and more.

Now you understand video better, how can you find someone who can get the job done for you? Simple.  Look for someone who has the best tools for the job. For example,   Adobe After Effects, Sony Vegas Pro, Explaindio for whiteboard videos are some of the high-end tools needed to create excellent videos.

So what’s stopping you?  Start an aggressive video marketing campaign now and see just how great your results will be. Need help?  It’s easy look for someone who offers solely video production or specializes mainly in it.  They are dedicated to making great videos that will shine a positive light on your business year after year.

Andrea Kalli at http://www.virtualassist.net/ has been supporting businesses with marketing since 2005, and in 2014 dedicated her focus to putting video as the forefront of her services.  She enjoys the creative and technical aspects of creating videos and video marketing and being able to bring her clients’ vision to life.

Business Resource: Newest Online Retail Haven: Shop on Main

Imagine taking a stroll down Main Street, going from boutique to boutique, window shopping, and purchasing the latest trends, all while sitting in front of your computer screen. Imagine engaging with fellow fashionistas and building personalized neighborhoods consisting of your favorite stores from across the country with just the click of a mouse.

These luxuries cannot be found on traditional online retail websites, but ShopOnMain.com is now here to make all of your virtual fashion dreams come true!

With ShopOnMain.com you can fully delight in your shopping desires, with direct access to the best online boutiques across the country. The site is fully interactive, allowing you to connect with other users through its social media channel without the hassle of trolls and stalkers, all while browsing the website as if you are strolling along the boulevard, browsing as you go.

So, I wanted to know more about Shop on Main because I am a big fan of Main Streets, USA, because you can find unique shops.  The interview is me: FA and SM is Shop on Main.

Faten (FA)What inspired the creation of Shop on Main?

Shop on Main (SM): We had several small business clients who were frustrated with their online sales.  We found that it was nearly impossible to help them within the confines of the current online sales platforms available. Most are not really set up favorably for the small business. You wind up competing solely on price, and sometimes the platforms themselves will even compete against you. Worse, the shopper often doesn’t even know exactly whom they are purchasing from. Small businesses spend time, effort and money building their store –but- the only business shoppers see is the platform itself.

So we wanted to create something that would be a better experience for small businesses, especially our clients.

But how to make it appealing to shoppers? Why should they come here instead of visiting the places that already exist? This is what led us to develop the idea of creating a unique experience for shoppers. One where you can shop like we do in the real world.  Pick an area (say San Francisco) then explore and discover … rather than hunt, add it to your cart and buy.

So really, we’re hoping to create something new on two fronts: A better experience for merchants, and a unique experience for shoppers.

FA: Who is behind the website?
SM: JJSmith Marketing. We’re a small company that handles internet marketing for clients. Our founder, Joseph Smith, was involved in online and software companies like Amazon.com in their earliest days. He took this knowledge and built a small team of talented dreamers who are just crazy enough to think they can change the world. The online world, anyway.

FA: What do the owners/creators hope Shop on Main will achieve?
SM: Right now, millions of tiny little Mom and Pop stores have their existence threatened not only by big box stores, but by the rise of online shopping. We envision a path to getting those stores online in a way that allows them to use the power of the internet FOR their businesses rather than feeling that it’s something they can’t quite make work. Or worse, something that’s an actual threat to their shops.

We want to create a place where merchants can grow their businesses together with thousands of other merchants from across the country, without just a race to the lowest price.

We see a place where shoppers can connect with those businesses and support them. But also, where shoppers can feel enriched by the shopping experience. Where you can spend an hour when you’re stuck on the bus or at the waiting room and walk away without feeling like you’ve wasted time, but instead that you’ve been somewhere, that you’ve experienced something new.

This is where you can find the unique gems that are hidden in stores all over the country (and eventually the world!) that aren’t found online now, because it’s not worth the effort for the smallest stores to add them to the giant shopping platforms.

FA: What can our readers on the site?  Why should they stop there?
SM: If they’re merchants, they should definitely talk to us about creating a store listing. Even if they’ve never sold products online before, we can help them get set up and make it work in a way that truly benefits them. We have some special benefits laid out for the merchants who sign up before we open to the public that will definitely make it worthwhile to sign up now rather than later when we’re the big thing online.

If you’re a shopper, then we have our “First Shoppers Club.” As we gear up to launch the site in the next 2-3 months, we need people that want to provide feedback in exchange for some really nice perks and benefits. What do they think of the experience as it unfolds? What do we need to add or change to make it truly unique for them?

We need to know what real shoppers think, and if they’ll actually provide that feedback we’ll make it well worth their while!

FA: How is Shop on Main similar/different to Shop on Main Street in real life?
SM: For one thing, it will be open 24 hours a day. So if you want to see what’s new at the store on the corner (or the corner in San Francisco or New York City) you can do that at 3 am. You’ll be able to add products to your cart from different stores all over the country and only check out once (we’ll divide the money and get it to the correct stores on our end, so for them it’s as if you checked out there, but for you it’s seamless).

It will be similar to shopping Main Street in that you can browse the stores in a particular area without having a certain product in mind. Merchants will be able to create a “store front window” that they can completely customize – some may want to show you certain product images in that window, some may want to show you a video of their quirky storefront, or a video of the owner saying hello… or maybe they just have text they want to put there for you to read. So as you scroll through your results, it’s like walking down a street and seeing which doors you want to open up, walk in and check out.

FA: Anything else to add?
SM: Merchants are going to be the key to this entire experience. So if you have products to sell, definitely get in touch! And if you’re a shopper who has a favorite store you’d really like to see, please let us know!

Subcontracting: Free Webinar to help small biz owners understand the risks and rewards

Did you know subcontracting to a large prime contractor can be a great way for women business owners to gain procurement experience, increase revenues and expand their contracting networks? An American Express OPEN report found that three-fourths of small businesses have contributed products or services as a subcontractor, deriving an average of 25 percent of their total procurement revenue.

To help small business owners position themselves effectively as subcontractors in the federal contract space, the Give Me 5 program will be hosting a free webinar that will explore the standard processes of Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs), teaming agreements, and subcontracts. The course will also discuss the many ins and outs of working with prime contractors, including:

  • Incorporating the relative strength of your bargaining power with Prime contractors in various situations into your negotiation strategies;
  • Comprehending the full impact, including necessity and risks, to any flow-down clauses or any non-standard clauses that Prime contractors may place upon small business partners;
  • Determining your "deal breakers" that will cause you to walk away from any potential teaming opportunity.

The Give Me 5 program was created by American Express OPEN and Women Impacting Public Policy to help women business owners get a leg up on selling to the world’s largest customer: the U.S. government.

Free Webinar – Leveraging Women-Owned Small Business Certifications to Win Contracts

Women business owners are working harder for government contracting opportunities. According to a recent survey from American Express OPEN, they invested $86,643 seeking federal contracts in 2010, up 23% from their 2009 investments of $70,512. Currently, just over one-third (37%) of active women contractors who have self-certified as a woman-owned small business (WOSB) report that the designation has been useful to them, with 17% saying that it’s been very or extremely useful.

Given recent efforts to enhance the WOSB Procurement Program and make it easier for women-owned businesses to win federal contracts, the WOSB certification will certainly become more beneficial. To help women-owned businesses maximize the year-old federal contracting program and receive their fair share of federal contracting dollars, American Express OPEN and Women Impacting Public Policy (WIPP) are offering a free web tutorial on Wednesday, April 4. This educational webinar is part of Give Me 5, a national program created by American Express OPEN and WIPP to help women business owners get their full 5% share of federal contracts.

In this one-hour webinar, Give Me 5 instructor Gloria Larkin, President of TargetGov, explains the unique requirements of the WOSB Procurement Program. The session will take a look at what happens after women entrepreneurs self-certify their business and walk them through the four required steps in order to compete for a WOSB set aside contract.

AmEx Offers Free Mentorship Opportunity for Small Business Government Contractors

Government contracting has proven a viable means of opening new revenue streams for small businesses. In fact, small business contractors are more likely to exceed $1 million in revenue versus their non-contracting peers with nearly half (47%) earning revenues in excess of $1 million versus the 5% of all small businesses that have achieved that level of business success. For novices or those looking to diversify their work in the space, however, identifying a mentor to help navigate these muddied waters can prove difficult. Not anymore.

Small contractors across the country now have an opportunity to take part in the Victory in Procurement (VIP) mentorship program from American Express OPEN. Participants will be educated on a host of topics, including the GSA schedule, business certifications, teaming arrangements and the importance of networking.

The mentorship program consists of 12 hours of one-on-one virtual communications with a government contracting experts Lourdes Martin-Rosa, American Express OPEN Advisor on Government Contracting, and/or Dona Storey, American Express OPEN Advisor on Procurement. To apply, interested business owners will need to fill out the VIP Mentorship Application, and email toVIPMentorship@mbooth.com. Applications will be due by May 1, 2012.

Each mentee that completes the program will be awarded a certificate of achievement and an online badge to be displayed on their website.  Mentees will also be given free PR during the program. Free Webinar for Small Businesses – “Does the Government Buy What I Sell?”

Even amidst pressures to reduce deficits, the U.S. government remains the world’s largest single purchaser of goods and services with federal contract spending amounting to just over $535 billion in fiscal year 2011. And as of late, the government has placed a greater emphasis on increasing small business contracting.

To help business owners achieve their contracting goals, American Express OPEN and Women Impacting Public Policy (WIPP) are offering a free web tutorial on Wednesday, March 7. This educational webinar is part of Give Me 5, a national program created by American Express OPEN and WIPP to help women business owners get a leg up on selling to the world’s largest customer: the U.S. government.

In this one-hour session, Doña Storey, the American Express OPEN Advisor on Procurement, will help business owners learn how to determine whether or not the federal government buys the products or services they offer. Historically, Uncle Sam procures everything from office furniture and airplanes to janitorial work, computer repair services and even kitty litter! Business owners will learn the who, what, where and how of the buy-sell cycle of the federal government, which is key in the “go-to-market strategy” to land the world’s biggest customer.

Teaching Women Business Owners How to Pitch to the Federal Government

Did you know there is roughly $27 billion in contracts set aside specifically for women business owners? Thanks to the Small Business Administration’s Women-Owned Small Business (WOSB) Program, which went into effect on February 4, women business owners have a greater chance to win government contracts. American Express OPEN and Women Impacting Public Policy (WIPP) are offering a free, one-hour tutorial next Wednesday, June 29 to teach entrepreneurs how to market their companies to government agencies.

This educational webinar is part of the Give Me 5 program, a national initiative created by American Express OPEN and WIPP to help women business owners get a leg up on selling to the world’s largest customer: the U.S. government. 9 Retirement Truths that Ensure Bliss vs. Bust

Finding joy and fulfillment throughout retirement

by
Julia Valentine

Aging is a fact, but how you experience it is your choice.  Many research studies show that life after 50 can be the most treasured time of your life. This because life perceptions are more positive and feelings of worry or stress decline.  Research also shows that a fulfilling retirement is impossible without concerted planning, which should extend beyond the requisite financial plan to also encompass your emotional wants, needs and desires based on thoughtful and practical self-reflection.

Retirement is the time when you have already fulfilled your obligations to others in life and are now free to make some new choices with yourself as the priority.  Indeed, with proper preparation and forethought, you can realize your full potential and enjoy an astonishing quality of life in retirement. This may include working, mentoring, volunteering, traveling, learning and anything else that helps you feel secure, joyful, independent, valuable and carefree.

Here are 9 Retirement Truths that will help ensure retirement is the treasure of your life:

Retirement Truth #1: Aging brings wisdom, not decline
It has been said that what you think about, you bring about. Telling yourself you are going to flourish in retirement can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. At the very least, you might take slightly better care of yourself and, in turn, find your way into the virtuous circle of feeling better emotionally and physically, doing more interesting things and ultimately enjoying yourself more.

Retirement Truth #2: Age is just a number
Chronological age is merely the number of candles on your birthday cake, while psychological age is your perception of how vital and vibrant you feel. Since the latter is a subjectively experienced age, you have a great deal of latitude in constructing beliefs that will either help you or limit your ability to flourish after 50. Construct wisely.

Retirement Truth #3: Creativity helps design your lifestyle
Discovering and exploring your everyday creativity is going to make a difference between boredom and the pure joy of being alive. Everyday creativity is invoked when the object of your creative efforts is your own life. It taps into our deepest need to feel useful and valuable. A creative life approach fosters flexibility and resourcefulness, helping you choose new pursuits, evolve with the changing times and design a satisfying lifestyle.

Retirement Truth #4: Fulfilling true needs is essential
Knowing what you want and, more importantly, what you need is difficult but critical. You cannot be happy without it. Research shows meeting one’s personal needs is essential for psychological health and, consequently, for more profound happiness, serenity and a high quality of inner life.

Retirement Truth #5: Know your motivation
Knowing why you do something is important because it will motivate you to go through with the action. Motivation is how we access the energy necessary to do anything, whether that means saving money, acquiring new skills or staying fit to enjoy life after 50. Understanding your own intentions and desired result of any decision or activity will result in clarity, less frustration, more of what you want, and less guilt about foregoing what doesn’t meet your needs.

Retirement Truth #6: Fail to plan, plan to fail
Research proves that a successful, happy retirement is impossible without planning based on self-examination. People who plan end up with twice the wealth of people who do not. Beyond financial planning, it is imperative to take time to figure out what lifestyle needs must be fulfilled to make you happy, and then find specific ways to ensure those needs can be met. Retirement lifestyle design then becomes the driver for making good choices and building the foundation of physical, emotional and financial health that ensures joy and fulfillment after 50.

Retirement Truth #7:  Evolution trumps fear
Do not be dragged along by the changing times when you have the freedom to preside over the process.  While evolution may not always mean improvement or progress, life’s progression is certainly an inevitability that should be embraced, not eschewed.  Change should be revered, not feared, as with change comes new learning and growth experiences - new opportunities and ways to contribute, to be significant and to create meaningful experiences for your self and for the people around you.

Retirement Truth #8: Joy requires harmony
A joyful life can only be truly achieved if your inner and outer worlds are in harmony – the alignment of your life’s needs and direction (which you can set to Joy, Meaning, Abundance, Fulfillment or anything else you desire) with your inner resources, like attitude, abilities, talents, skills, experience and personality traits. People wholly integrated at this level are conscious of their needs, emotions, impulses, pleasures and pains. They enjoy an amazing quality of life with frequent peak experiences, are more at peace, and are less split between an experiencing-self and an observing-self.

Retirement Truth #9: Quality of life requires more than money
It is easy to mistake comfort for quality of life.  An astonishing quality of life encompasses both material comfort and joy. To live with joy, it is imperative to not only identify and understand your emotional needs, but actively work to meet them. Do this and the second half of your life will be even better than the first.

Speaker and JoyCompass.com founder Julia Valentine is the author of Joy Compass: How to Make Your Retirement the Treasure of Your Life. Through cutting edge research in finance, motivation and creativity, Joy Compass offers a revolutionary new approach to preparing for, designing and enjoying life in retirement. Webinar - Small Business Owner Receives Help in Leveraging Teaming Arrangements to Win Contracts

Through the power of collaboration and partnerships as well as developing a subcontracting and teaming plan, business owners can effectively capitalize on the more than $500 billion the U.S. government spends each year in federal contracts. In 2009, the federal government awarded $537 billion in contracts, making it the largest consumer in the world.

According to an American Express OPEN survey, business owners who team up with other small businesses to jointly bid on federal contracts see the greatest results: Two-thirds (68 percent) of active small business contractors who have pursued teaming opportunities have exceeded $1 million in federal contracts won to date, and 38 percent have exceeded $10 million. Also, businesses that partner with a larger prime contractor also report a higher success rate versus the average small business contractor: 61 percent of active small businesses that have performed as a subcontractor report that the total value of all of the federal contracts they have won to date exceeds $1 million, and 31 percent have exceeded $10 million.

As the fourth part of the special hour-long, one-one-mentorship webinars we’ve been promoting the last couple of months, Lourdes Martin-Rosa, American Express OPEN Advisor on Government Contracting, and Women Impacting Public Policy (WIPP), will help one woman business owner develop an effective strategy for teaming.  These webinars are a part of the Give Me 5 program – a national program by American Express OPEN and WIPP to help women businesses owners access and win their share of government contracts.
