New York: Opened by Academy Award winning actress and media activist Geena Davis, SPARK Summit will give girls the tools they need to become activists, organizers, researchers, policy influencers, and media makers. As the American Psychological Association's Task Force Report on the Sexualization of Girls makes clear, the media objectifies girls at increasingly young ages, encouraging an unhealthy relationship between girls, their bodies, and the surrounding culture. Rather than seeking to protect girls from the problem, the Sexualization Protest: Action, Resistance, Knowledge (SPARK) will engage girls to become part of the solution.
Jamia Wilson, Vice President of Programs at the Women's Media Center says, "The sexualization of girls in the media does not have to be normalized. Girls deserve alternatives to a hyper-sexualized media landscape, and SPARK will  make space for girls to proactively create solutions to the problem." MTV personality Amber Madison will host the event, and activists like feminist organizer Shelby Knox, Reality Bites Back author and media critic Jennifer Pozner, and Yes Means Yes author Jaclyn Friedman will also participate in the Summit.
Featuring a Halloween fashion show, videos, workshops, panels, action stations, networking, performances, and a virtual summit livestreaming from www.sparksummit.com, SPARK will foster a community that grows on- and off-line. By empowering girl activists, SPARK will launch a movement for girls' rights to healthy sexuality that will continue beyond the October 22nd Summit.
