USA Gymnastics meets the Harlem Globetrotters

What happens when Rhythmic Gymnastics meets the Harlem Globetrotters?  Two stars of the world famous team found out during a visit with 17-year-old Camilla Feeley of the U.S. National Team.  The hilarious video below shows Globetrotters female star Ace Jackson and her teammate Bull Bullard trading tricks with Feeley at the national headquarters for U.S. rhythmic gymnastics in the Chicago area.

Featured in the video is Ace, only the 13th female in the Globetrotters’ 91 year history.  Ace joined Bull, who has proven his versatility by making the finals of “American Ninja Warrior” on NBC and trying out for the New York Jets.
Feeley is a resident of Highland Park, IL, and was the alternate for the 2016 Olympic Games.  Feeley is the 2016 U.S. clubs champion, all-around & ball silver medalist, and hoop bronze medalist.

The Globetrotters are set to tip off their new world tour next week, including four games in the team’s birthplace of Chicago on Dec. 28-29. The Globetrotters will play over 340 games in over 250 cities starting Dec. 26 through the end of April.  Ticket information and the schedule are available at www.harlemglobetrotters.com.

The Evolution of Women's Sports: International Women's Day

March 8th is International Women's Day.

This year's theme is Pledge for Parity, serving to raise awareness and take steps towards gender equality. One of the many areas gender parity is needed is in the sports industry. While 40% of all sports participants are female, only 4% of women's sports receive sports media coverage.

Gender inequality can even be seen at the high school sports level, where for every dollar spent on women's sports, about two and half dollars are spent on men's sports. Ohio University's Athletic Administration program created this infographic which highlights the evolution of women's sports in participation, growing fan base, and the increasing power of women's athletics.  For example, for the first time, Nike started selling jerseys for the Women's World Cup winning team in men's sizes.

Girls Can Play Too

There is a misconception that girls are not interested in sports. The truth is, nearly half of the fans in the major leagues are women and the number of female athletes continues to grow. Their voices need to be heard as well. Men currently dominate administrative roles in sports but women are gaining momentum as leaders in the field. Intrepid pioneers are changing perceptions and setting the stage for even greater female representation at the top of athletic programs. Created by Ohio University's athletic administration program, this infographic illustrates how women are beginning to play a more prominent role in the professional world of athletics and the challenges that still lie ahead for women in athletic administration.

Craft Idea: Sports Pennants Banner

Sportsboy loves baseketball, baseball and soccer.  He plays on teams.  This year, he will actually get to try out for school teams because he is entering 7th grade.  He's excited.

So I bought these 30 professional basketball team pennants (NBA teams) for Sportsboy's room.  However, they didn't come connected.  Of course thanks to Pinterest, I was looking at some pinspirations.  (Follow me on Pinterest). For the finished project, I took pictures with my iPhone because my son was excited the banner looked pretty cool, and I didn't want to take out my camera.

I decided to connect the pennants together with burlap twine and glue, and a little bit of tape for sturdiness.  Sportsboy helped as well.

Once we were finished, Sportsboy and I took the banner to his room and hung it above the doorway and his closet.

Looks pretty nice.

The Impact of Title IX on Women's Equality in Sports

The record-breaking viewership of the Women’s World Cup final this year showed how far women’s sports have come since Title IX, which was a law enacted in 1972 to prevent gender discrimination in sports.

In fact, the year before Title IX was enacted, there were only 310,000 girls and women in America playing high school and college sports; today, there are more than 3.3 million.  Below is  an infographic, created by Ohio University’s Athletic Administration program, which illustrates the importance of Title IX and the monumental strides that it has helped achieve in women’s sports. While women only received 2% of college athletic budgets in 1972, by 2010, women received 40% of budgets.

Encouraging Youth through Responsible Sports

Recently, I accepted a challenge from ResponsibleSports.com and TwitterMoms to answer this question: "As a parent, how do you encourage and reinforce the positive aspects of youth sports?" With the alarming rates of obesity showing up in our children, it is vital that we as parents, among other advocates, ensure our children receive some kind of physical activities via exercises or sports.

It is tempting to feed our children junk food and have them sit in front of the television during the majority of their day when they are not in school or other organized activities such as camps or library activities. By doing this, parents or care takers become the enablers--not improving the situation, but worsening it.

A simple way we can help our children is by becoming active ourselves. If you are not used to being active, it can or may be overwhelming to even start. Take it one step at a time. Children mimic their parents, so if they see their parents enjoying their workouts, chances are their children will feel the same way.

On a personal level, I have enrolled my son in some kind of sport activity once he turned three, the allowable age in our area. (Note: your area may allow a child to start at a different age level, check with your park district or other organizations). His first organized activity was Tae Kwon Do. He took it for two years. However, he began to be bored of it. Instead of forcing him to continue with it, we tried other sports: soccer and swimming. He loves those two sports today, even after 2.5 years of doing them.

It is now our tradition to sign up my son for soccer and swimming every summer, once school is out. My son was deathly afraid of the water to the point the instructor told me to wait til the next year to sign up. Thank God, I didn't listen (don't they say mom knows best?). I sat next to my son near the swimming pool, and I asked him about the cartoon Arthur and how they swim in the pool in the beginning of the show and during the show at times. He felt safe knowing Arthur uses the pool. He told the instructor he was ready to join the class. Since then, he hasn't looked back.

To encourage my son to take part in sports, my husband and I signed up for American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO). I had originally signed up as a volunteer to help on the sidelines. However, that changed when the administrators contacted me to be a coach for my son's team with them sending me to training. I agreed. My son loved it. He saw me in a different light, while being his mom, I was also his soccer coach. I made the practices fun. This will be my second year as my son's returning coach.

To encourage youth to participate in sports, parents shouldn't over schedule them with activities. This will help in reducing stress and burning out.
